Many online courses require proctored exams. The proctor's role is to verify the identity of the student taking the exam and supervise to ensure that the instructions specified by the instructor are carried out.
Who Can be a Proctor?
The following are eligible for approval:
- Local College/professional testing center (proctor fee may be assessed)
- School Superintendent, Principal, vice Principal or other administrator (not for math classes)
- Military base/station education officer (only for students who are deployed or living on base)
- SIU off-campus academic advisor (must be available on exam dates)
- Libraries/Librarians
The following individuals are ineligible for approval
- Relative or friend with whom you have a personal relationship outside of school or business
- Employer or Supervisor
- Tutor
- Ecclesiastical leader
- Athletic Coach, including assistant coaches
- Current SIU students
- Teacher or Instructor
Policies and Procedures:
- Student must first find an appropriate proctor that fits the approved description above. Proctors must be found and forms filled out by the fourth week of the semester, or sooner if you need a proctor earlier.
- Student will then fill out the Proctor Approval Form.
- After the student has filled out the form and the proctor has been verified and approved, your proctor will receive exam instructions. You will receive an email stating that your proctor was approved and sent the instructions. There are a few classes where your proctor will not receive instructions until closer to your exam dates (such as Math).
- Please allow at least 5 full business days (not including weekends) for proctors to be approved and exam information sent out. Proctors will be sent a form with conditions they must agree to before we will disburse exam material.
- Students should only use one proctoring center at a time. Occasionally students find that their chosen proctor isn't a good fit. We ask that you carefully consider time limitations before requesting a different proctor.
- Testing Services has the right to refuse any proctor they feel does not fall within the Proctor Guidelines for approval.
- Any student found submitting in false information about a proctor in the request form or found using someone outside of Testing Services Policies will be reassigned a proctor at our discretion. Reassignment will involve another testing center of our approval.
- Many Test Centers charge fees to proctor exams. The average fee is approximately $25.00 per exam. The student is responsible for any fees incurred at their chosen Test Center.
